5. Damon Eliza Palermo - Chongquing

1080p Records I created this 360 degree video for LA-based musician Damon Palermo’s solo record on 1080p, based out of Vancouver. I explored a technique leveraging layered digital processing imperfections to complement the textural and abstract qualities of the music. The 3d was rendered in Houdini (using Mantra) with as much sampling error (grain) as possible, and then in compositing I used the shifting motion vectors calculated from the source to drive the rippling distortions that articulate the forms of the piece. The video premiered on AQNB in 2017.

Melody as Truth
Melody as Truth approached me and co-director Will Galperin about doing a music video for an upcoming release. We had been working on a previous concept about growth and decay and decided that it would be a perfect fit for the song. The video was done in Houdini and makes heavy use of a differential growth method first developed by Johan Gardfeldt. The forms that grow out of the sculpted figures are generated using a mathematical model of the way that corals, algae, and other living organisims grow. Each part of the surface evolves according to a simple set of rules modeling the effects of light and nutrition and the final form emerges as a result of this process.

Melody as Truth

Will Galperin and I were approached by two musicians from Amsterdam to do a music video and then a set of tour visuals for them. The topic was introspection, so we used slitscanning and choreography to explore time and emotion in moving images. Craig Hollomon joined us to design the chroeography, perform, and co-direct the music video. The music video is above and stills from the visuals are below.

3. Wolfeinstein Youngblood E3 Trailer

©MPC, Bethesda Softworks / 2018

At MPC, I was one of four 2d and 3d artists who worked on this trailer. It announced the game at E3, playing before the creators’ official announcement. I was brought on after the design phase to be one of the production artists. The timeline was tight, and using Cinema4d we were able to assemble the shots from game assets and stock models that we re-textured and re-modeled as necessary. In key shots, the trailer uses volumetric smoke that I simulated in Houdini to add a heightened level of realism. I helped design our rendering pipeline in coordination with the 3d VFX department and IT so that we could take on the challenge of raytracing all the hazy light shafts that help define the look of the piece.
I handled 3d and compositing for the following shots:

4. Samsung Winter Games

WP / 1873 MPC was tasked with creating a CG alpine adventure for one of Samsung’s many installations at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games held in Pyeongchang County, South Korea. The culmination of the piece would be a two minute shot in which viewers traveled into a city made of data, for which I was responsible for the 3d animation. The piece played on a Samsung Galaxy phone in a Gear VR headset, which meant a 4k stereo deliverable. As part of creating the 3d, I generated inital composites and established a preview pipeline in Nuke which meshed seamlessly with the final compositing workflow.

For a complete breakdown of the whole project, have a look at MPC’s project page for it:https://www.moving-picture.com/our-work/los-angeles/samsung-vr-winter-ride
